“Is there anything I should be taking for that?”It gets asked at the counter every day. Here's something to point to.
For Pharmacists, Community and Beyond

Answer “What Should I Take?”
With a Score Worth Coming Back For.

The vitamin aisle brings a steady run of questions: what to take, whether it is worth it, how to eat better. Answers tend to stop at the shelf. Prysm iO reads skin carotenoids, the pigments in colourful fruit and vegetables, from a fingertip in about 15 seconds and returns one number a customer can follow in an app, and you can ask about it on their next visit. Pharmacist advice stays exactly where it is; this sits next to it.

  • A wellness reading, not a health check: it says nothing about any condition, medicine or treatment
  • Compact enough for the healthcare counter or a consultation-room shelf, and used with an app on a phone or tablet

There is no script and no obligation: the call is simply a chance to judge whether a scanner could earn its place in your pharmacy.

The question asked across the counter

Customers Ask What to Take. The Answer Usually Ends at the Shelf.

Questions about vitamins, supplements and healthy eating turn up throughout the day, wedged between dispensing and everything else. The usual answer is some general guidance, a gesture at the shelf and a nudge towards a GP or dietitian where it matters. Prysm iO leaves that alone. It gives one small part of the conversation, eating more colourful fruit and vegetables, a score the customer can follow on their phone and you can ask about next time. It is not a pharmacy service and tells you nothing about anyone's health, medicines or conditions.

1.6 million

People visit a community pharmacy in England on an average day, according to Community Pharmacy England - a steady stream of people you could ask a simple question of

15 sec

Time needed for one fingertip scan - short enough to fit into a quiet moment at the counter or the end of a consultation

29%

Adults in England who ate five or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day in 2022, per the Health Survey for England (self-reported) - plenty of room for a nudge

What the range contains

What Is Actually in the Range

A low score usually raises the follow-up question of what else can help apart from eating more fruit and vegetables. Pharmanex products are built around carotenoids and everyday nutrients and are designed to be highly bioavailable. This is what the range contains, stated plainly, with no promise about anyone's health, medicines or any condition. A pharmacy already sells its own supplements, so this range would sit alongside yours.

A smiling woman holding the Prysm iO scanner, surrounded by hands offering the Pharmanex LifePak, JVi and Beauty Focus products

Carotenoids, including lutein

Bright plants such as leafy greens supply lutein, one of the carotenoids. Some products in the range contain it along with other carotenoids, in forms designed to be highly bioavailable. Carotenoids are the pigments Prysm iO detects in the skin.

A fruit-and-vegetable beverage

JVi is a fruit-and-vegetable drink containing carotenoids and vitamin C, one option for a customer whose score suggests they are short on colourful produce.

DHA omega-3

Marine Omega provides EPA and DHA. DHA helps maintain normal vision and normal brain function as part of a varied diet.

Vitamins and minerals

LifePak formulas provide a broad range of vitamins and minerals, formulated to support the immune system and normal energy metabolism among other everyday functions.

Substantiated Before It Reaches the Shelf

Nu Skin says every Pharmanex formula goes through its 6S Quality Process: selection, sourcing, structure, standardisation, safety and substantiation. The last of these means product claims are based on documented preclinical and clinical studies. Even so, what tends to convince people is their own result: they scan, take the products, and watch their score change.

Do customers ask which supplement to take?

Let the Score Do the Comparing

Someone already taking another product? Take a baseline scan first. If they decide to try a Prysm-certified alternative, re-scan over the following weeks and let them see the result. Because the scan reads carotenoids in skin tissue, an upward score is objective evidence that what they take is being absorbed, with no need to take it on trust.

Nu Skin backs this with a Prysm Score money-back guarantee: if the score has not improved after 90-100 days on a certified, Prysm-eligible product, it is refundable, subject to Nu Skin's Terms and Conditions.

100 Million Healthy Households

Some customers, and plenty of parents, will want a device at home so the family can scan and compare. Nu Skin's stated aim is 100 million healthy households, each with a Prysm iO and better shared habits around food and supplements. If you offer a customer a device, say you have a commercial interest, as you should with anything you recommend.

Where a clinician has advised a specific supplement, it changes only with that clinician's agreement. Anyone on prescribed medicines or with a health condition should speak to a pharmacist or their prescriber before starting one. The score is a wellness reading and is never a reason to stop or swap what a doctor, pharmacist or dietitian recommended.

Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet, which should always come first. These products are not medicines and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any medical condition, and they do not replace pharmacist advice, assessment or treatment. Please check each product's label for its exact ingredients and amounts.

Worth settling before anything else

Four Questions a Careful Pharmacist Asks First

You are registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (or the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland), "pharmacist" is a protected title, and people take your word on what is safe to swallow. Sensible questions come first, so here are the ones we hear most often, answered straight.

Two women at a kitchen counter, one touching the Prysm iO scanner while the other holds up a phone showing the result

"Doesn't earning from this create a conflict of interest?"

Ask it first, because your regulator will. The GPhC's standards for pharmacy professionals expect you to put people's interests first, to be honest and trustworthy, and to behave in a way that keeps public trust; earning from something you recommend sits squarely inside that. In practice: declare it openly, leave the decision with the customer, and keep it well away from any professional judgement about their medicines or health. Some pharmacists choose to run Prysm iO only outside their own pharmacy, and that is a reasonable position. Read the GPhC (or PSNI) guidance, your employer's policy and your insurer's terms before you begin.

"Does the scan tell me anything about a condition or a medicine?"

No. Prysm iO looks at carotenoid levels in fingertip skin, a marker of how much colourful fruit and vegetable someone eats. It cannot show how a medicine is working, screen for disease or flag interactions, and it makes no claim to diagnose, predict or treat. Where a customer takes prescribed medicines or has a health condition, any supplement is a conversation for you or their prescriber, as it is with any other product you sell.

"We already sell vitamins and supplements."

Worth being straightforward about: a pharmacy with its own supplement range already has a commercial interest in what it recommends, and Prysm iO adds a second one. Pharmanex products are sold through Nu Skin rather than from your shelves, so they sit beside your own range instead of in it. The scan cannot tell you that one product beats another, only how carotenoid levels move, so never present it as proof that stock you carry is inferior. Owners and superintendents should decide whether that fits; employed pharmacists should ask before they start.

"I am an owner, a manager, a locum, or in a GP practice or hospital."

Each position has different rules. A pharmacy owner or superintendent sets the policy for their premises; a manager at a multiple will usually find head office decides; a locum works within the host pharmacy's rules; and pharmacists in hospitals, GP practices or primary care networks are bound by their employer's policy and often by their contract. NHS-contracted pharmacies also have terms of service to keep in mind. Read the paperwork first and ask if any of it is unclear.

Under the hood

One Fingertip, One Score, Under a Minute

Light does the measuring. A fingertip goes on the scanner, the device shines light across it, and about 15 seconds later a personalised wellness score appears. With no needles, sample pots or lab work involved, it asks very little of someone who has popped in for a prescription or a few minutes' advice.

The output is a single result that can be tracked. It is not a clinical measure and says nothing about any condition or medicine, but it is easy to explain and easy to revisit, which suits a short conversation about diet at the counter.

Every scan is taken from a fingertip on the same hand, which keeps one visit comparable with the next and makes a customer's trend meaningful instead of erratic. The device pairs with the Prysm iO app on an iOS or Android phone or tablet, so you will need to install the app and get to know it. After that it works as well on the healthcare counter as in a consultation room.

Prysm iO device alongside the app showing a personal wellness score

Prysm iO is a wellness insight tool. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, prevent, or mitigate any disease or medical condition, and it is not a substitute for pharmacist advice, assessment or treatment, or for medical or dietetic advice.

01

Done in a Quarter of a Minute

Short enough to slot in at the healthcare counter or after a consultation, and easy to run from a quiet corner. No blood sample, no lab, no waiting around for a result.

02

Spectral Rai Technology

Placing a fingertip on the scanner captures tens of thousands of individual light measurements through hyperspectral absorption, reading carotenoid-related activity in the skin.

03

A Single Score

An AI model condenses those readings into one Prysm Score between 100 and 1000. There is no printout to interpret, just one figure a customer understands straight away.

04

A Reason to Come Back

Customers follow their score in a linked app in between visits, which keeps your advice on eating well in front of them and gives you an easy opening to ask how it is going.

05

A Paper Trail Behind It

Pharmanex has carried out over 20 years of research and development on skin-carotenoid scanning: 110 clinical studies, 180 white papers and 18 global patents. Few wellness gadgets can point to that.

Why a number helps

Give Better Eating
Something to Aim At.

Many people intend to eat better and never learn whether it is working. Prysm iO gives them a score from 100 to 1000 in its companion app, something to follow between visits and something you can ask about next time. It supports a healthier routine; it says nothing about how anyone's health or treatment is going.

Two people sharing a joke at a kitchen counter with a bowl of produce as one rests a fingertip on the Prysm iO scanner

Something Measurable to Mention

Pharmacy work is full of numbers, from blood pressure readings to weigh-ins, yet eating habits rarely have one. Skin carotenoid scores tend to follow diet and supplement use across a few weeks, so a customer who changes what they eat can watch the figure respond instead of wondering whether anything is happening.

Regular Visits Make Natural Re-Scans

People return to a pharmacy again and again, for advice, seasonal services, health checks or a weight-management programme where the pharmacy runs one. A second scan on one of those visits sets a before and after side by side. Keep it clearly separate from anything dispensing-related, so it never feels like a sales pitch.

A Cheerful Topic

Much of what is said across a pharmacy counter is about what is wrong. A score someone owns, and can lift by putting more colour on their plate, is a more upbeat thread to pick up, and it stays apart from their medicines and their symptoms.

Worth saying out loud: a higher score does not mean a medicine is working better, and a low score says nothing about someone's health or the treatment they are on. They ought to hear that directly from you.

Where might it fit in your pharmacy?

Six Ways Pharmacy Teams Could Use This

Pharmacists work in independent shops, national chains, hospitals, GP practices and on locum rotas, alongside technicians and counter teams of every size. See whether any of these looks like the way your own week is set up.

A person placing a fingertip on the Prysm iO scanner at a reception desk while a team member looks on

Independent Pharmacy Owners

An owner sets the policy for their own premises, can decide which services and products sit alongside the dispensary, and can have the team run scan sessions without touching dispensing time. That also means getting the declared-interest side right is your responsibility.

Pharmacists at Multiples and Chains

Branch pharmacists usually work to head-office policy on what can be offered and earned from. Only consider this where your employer permits it in writing, and where declaring it is something you are comfortable doing.

Technicians, Dispensers and Counter Teams

A pharmacy technician, dispenser or healthcare-counter colleague can run paid 15-minute scan sessions in a quiet corner or consultation room, leaving pharmacist time and dispensing alone. Position it as a wellbeing extra unrelated to anyone's medicines.

Pharmacists With Private Services

Health checks, weight-management support, travel and vaccination clinics, and other private consultations bring people who already come wanting a fuller conversation about how they eat. Whether and how a scan fits depends on the service and on the owner's policy.

Locum, Hospital and Primary Care Pharmacists

Locums, hospital pharmacists and those working in GP practices or primary care networks are usually bound by an employer's or host pharmacy's rules. Use it only where they allow it, ideally well away from your own patient contact.

Pharmacists Who Run Talks and Events

Community talks, workplace wellbeing days, health-awareness weeks and school or club evenings all go better with something hands-on. A scanner gives an audience exactly that, well away from your dispensing counter.

Start the Conversation
Repeat income, declared openly

Repeat Income, and the Rules Around It.

If a person chooses to subscribe to a product after scanning, you earn commission on each repeat shipment for as long as the subscription runs, whether or not they ever walk into your pharmacy again. As a registered pharmacy professional you should earn it carefully. It holds up best when your interest is declared, the customer is free to refuse, nothing changes to a medicine or a supplement a clinician has advised without that clinician's agreement, and the score is described honestly as a general wellness figure. Handled that way, it can sit beside your pharmacy work without pulling against it.

Prysm iO wellness supplement range

Say So Before They Ask

Whenever Prysm iO comes up with a customer, let them know you earn from it. The GPhC's standards for pharmacy professionals expect honesty and behaviour that maintains public trust, and a financial interest that colours a recommendation can undermine both. Being upfront also makes for a better conversation than leaving the interest unspoken.

Theirs to Decide

These are wellness supplements, not medicines. Nobody should be nudged towards them because of what it could earn you, and they must never take the place of pharmacist advice, medical care or a dietitian's input. Anything a person takes alongside prescribed medicines is a conversation for you or their prescriber first. A customer can say no without it changing anything about how you serve them.

Renewals Are Not Your Job

Questions about billing, deliveries or accounts come to us, not to your counter, so nobody on your team chases payments or traces parcels. You simply see commission credited after each repeat shipment.

Check the Paperwork First

Your employer, the pharmacy owner or superintendent, your NHS contract and terms of service, and your professional indemnity insurer could each set their own limits on promoting products or earning commission, so find out what applies to you and ask before you start. We cannot advise on regulation, so please check rather than assume.

Run the numbers

What Could This Add Alongside Your Pharmacy Work?

Try figures that match how you could realistically run scan sessions, and watch how scan fees, retail profit and commission might build as subscribers accumulate. It is a way to test your own assumptions, not a forecast.

Every figure comes from scans that are carried out and the subscriptions people then choose to take up. The 5-year figure assumes 10 scans a week, every week, without a break, and most people will not keep that up for five years. The real limit is finding enough people to scan in a setting where doing so is appropriate. Income of this kind should be openly declared. Whether and how you use Prysm iO with your own customers is for you to settle against the GPhC's standards (or the PSNI's in Northern Ireland), your NHS contract terms, the pharmacy owner's or employer's policy and your insurer before you rely on any of these figures.

What stands behind the number

“A pharmacist is right to want to know what a score rests on before mentioning it across the counter.”

Three things stand behind it. Researchers have long treated skin carotenoids as a marker of fruit and vegetable intake. Pharmanex has spent two decades developing the scanning technology inside the device. And Prysm iO has won a Technology Innovation award (TITAN Business Awards), a Wellness Insight award (Globee Business Awards) and a Good Design Award. It is a wellness tool, never a clinical instrument, but these points give you a straight answer when a colleague or customer asks what is behind it.

Peer-reviewed, not just marketed

Yale Researchers Tested the Underlying Science

Researchers at Yale School of Public Health independently assessed the underlying skin-carotenoid science, and their 2013 paper described it as “an attractive biomarker for use in human studies” that is “highly reproducible and valid.”

Health Events Where Nobody Is at Your Counter

Pharmacists give talks to community groups, join health-awareness weeks, staff stands at workplace wellbeing days and visit clubs and schools. At any of them, a device on the table lets people have a go themselves, and you sidestep the awkward questions that come with suggesting a product to someone who relies on you for their medicines.

01

The Device Starts the Conversation

A compact scanner with a glowing ring, set out on a table at a workplace wellbeing day, a community talk or a health-awareness stand, tempts people over to ask what it is.

02

The Result Speaks for Itself

Everyone walks away with a real figure and a line on what it stands for. That holds attention better than a healthy-eating leaflet, and the chat stays on general wellbeing, never on anyone's medicines or conditions.

03

Follow-Up Only If They Want It

Anyone who wants more can leave contact details, having agreed to be contacted. Attendees are never cold-called, and nobody is enrolled in anything they did not ask for.
